2025 Federal Budget: Not Much Changing for Aussie Businesses

Last Updated on March 26, 2025 by

Another federal budget, another round of lukewarm leftovers for Australian businesses. You were hoping for bold reform, juicy tax incentives, or a game-changing handout to help you scale?

At SBO Financial, we work with rapidly growing businesses that are driving innovation, creating jobs, and punching above their weight. But this year’s budget? It barely throws them a bone.

Still, there are a few things worth noting (and a few landmines to avoid).

So, welcome to your no-BS breakdown of the 2025 Federal Budget and what it means for your business.

The Headline Budget Changes

Minor Tax Cuts That Barely Touch the Sides

From July 2026, the tax rate for incomes in the lowest tax bracket (that is, between $18,201 and $45,000) will drop from 16% to 15%, and then down to 14% in July 2027.

Sounds great until you realise it’s a $5-a-week saving. So it’s not exactly a rocket boost for disposable income or business spending.

Bye-Bye Instant Asset Write-Offs (Probably)

The sub-$20k instant asset write-off is set to expire on 30 June 2025. If your business has been using this to invest in tools, tech or fit-outs, you might want to bring forward purchases before EOFY. After that, we’re back to slow-burn depreciation.

What The 2025 Budget Means for Your Business

SaaS Providers

With non-compete clauses getting scrapped for employees under $175k, expect higher churn. That gun developer who wants to jump to a competitor or launch their own app? Now they can.

On the flip side, this opens up a floodgate of newly available talent. Employers will need to lean harder into culture, equity, and career progression to keep staff from jumping ship.

Meanwhile, there was zero mention of R&D tax incentive changes or improving the treatment of employee share schemes – two things that would help the Aussie SaaS ecosystem scale globally.

eCommerce Businesses

The ATO’s cash injection is aimed squarely at cracking down on tax dodgers – and yes, that includes your operations. If your reporting doesn’t line up with your Shopify data? Fix it before they come knocking.

If you’ve been relying on the instant asset write-off to purchase equipment, speak with your accountant to see if sneaking in some new goodies in the next couple of months would benefit your business.

While $12 million has been earmarked to help small businesses (mostly via franchising enforcement, ASIC data upgrades and protection against unfair contract terms), it’s a drop in the ocean. But hey, every little helps.

What Else is Missing?

  • No clarity on Division 7A reform – uncertainty remains on how private company loans to shareholders will be taxed, creating uncertainty for directors and accountants alike.
  • No solution for bracket creep – as wages rise with inflation, more Aussies are getting dragged into higher tax brackets without any real increase in purchasing power.
  • No meaningful incentives for digital transformation, automation or AI adoption – a missed opportunity to support businesses looking to improve productivity through tech.

If you were looking for a reason to invest, hire or scale up in 2025, this budget doesn’t give you one.

Final Thoughts: Stay Smart, Stay Nimble

This budget won’t ruin your year, but it’s not going to supercharge it either. It’s a holding pattern – and that means the businesses that win are the ones that focus on their own game.

Stay tight on cash flow. Keep your systems clean. Sharpen your hiring and retention strategies. And make sure your tax and compliance game is rock-solid because the ATO is cashed up and coming.
